MAGNESIUM HYDROXIDE

Magnesium hydroxide is classified as a weak base.  It is sparingly soluble in water, and is available as a slurry. Some benefits include:

  • Decreased usage
  • Precipitates metals at lower pH
  • Produces faster settling sludge
  • Higher sludge percent solids
  • Lowers waste disposal costs
  • Buffers at pH of 9.0
  • Lowers toxicity in effluents
  • Improves bio-digestion
  • Decrease polymer needs
  • Non-corrosive

Magnesium hydroxide is an alternative alkali for the neutralization of wastewater and metals removal. On a dry basis, magnesium hydroxide neutralizes more acid than caustic soda, hydrated lime, or soda ash.

In addition, the use of magnesium hydroxide for neutralization of acids is proven to be safe and economical for optimizing biological digestion. Numerous benefits over the use of lime and caustic soda have been observed in hundreds of different plants.

Magnesium hydroxide forms a buffer and eliminates the danger of an accidental kill of the bio-organisms caused by over feeding of the neutralizer. This pH stability is observed in both the clarifiers and activation stages. Magnesium hydroxide prevents the rapid rise and fall of pH levels, which results in less stress to the biological system.

Magnesium is a nutrient essential to growth and results in more rapid aerobic digestion, especially in denitrification systems. It also helps to keep phosphate concentrations stable.

Magnesium hydroxide is easy to handle, and non-hazardous for workers. Storage and feed systems are simple, requiring an agitated tank or cone bottom tank with a recirculation line.

Magnesium hydroxide can be shipped to your facility in drums, totes or tank trucks.
